Gary is Group Chief Executive of Hastings Insurance Group. Previously he was Chief Executive of NBNK Investments, an investment vehicle formed in August 2010 to establish a UK-focused retail banking serving personal and business customers and before that he was Chief Executive of Northern Rock. Gary was Vice-Chairman of Barclays plc. from 2006-08, having also been Chairman of UK Banking and Barclaycard at Barclays plc. following five years as Chief Executive of Barclaycard.
His career began at Barclays where he joined the graduate trainee scheme in 1982 having read Economics at Cambridge University. Throughout his career, Gary has had responsibility for service and sales to Barclays’ retail customers in the UK, he set up Barclaycall (Barclays’ telephone banking service) and launched the company’s internet banking service.
Gary was appointed to the Barclays Group Executive Committee in 2001 and joined the Board of Barclays plc. and Barclays Bank plc. as an Executive Director on 1 January 2004. He is a Board member of VISA Europe and a Board member of Trinity Mirror plc.
In July 2008 Gary received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Northampton, having been made a Visiting Professor in 2007.
