NEW FLOODLIGHTS ARE A BREATH OF FRESH AIR FOR THE PEPPERMINTS Newquay AFC – who were founded in 1890 and are nicknamed the‘Peppermints’ – were the beneficiaries of a £13,542 grant from the FSIF to upgrade the club’s floodlights at their Mountwise Stadium. As well as greatly benefitting the first team, the grant also allowed the Peppermints’ youth sides to play games throughout the autumn and winter, something that had not previously been possible. The grant allowed the club to improve the accessibility of the ground, through hardstanding areas, enabling better access for the disabled fans. “Night games were always a worry,” said Peppermints fan Sandra Biggins.“But not now. This new floodlight upgrade means we will be able to not only watch games throughout the whole season, but our youngsters can train and play on it throughout the darker months of the year as well. The Premier League’s investment here is wonderful.” This latest grant came after previous investment from the FSIF into the Mountwise Stadium, with Newquay AFC awarded £17,707 in 2012 towards the refurbishment of their changing rooms. John Moore, Secretary, Newquay AFC, said: “We are deeply indebted to the Premier League, through the FSIF, for the grant they gave the club. Without the floodlights and hard standing, we would not be able to stay in the current league we play in.” 13 | focus on floodlights TEAM: NEWQUAY AFC LOCATION: MOUNTWISE STADIUM FSIF GRANT: £13,542
