FACILITY FOCUS is a regular feature that
revisits some Foundation-funded sites that
were unveiled a few years ago and shows you
the difference that they are making to football
and sport in the area.

Who has the project engaged?
The third generation pitch is primarily used for football
and provides three playing areas; other spor ts usage
would be curriculum and recreational.The rabbit
fencing around the grass pitches for matches means
that the school can host league and cup matches at
home, as can its par tner clubs: Hedingham Hawks FC
and Earls ColneYouth FC.

Project description:
The Foundation grant
was awarded in 2009 and helped fund a floodlit
third generation ar tificial grass pitch on the site
of Hedingham School. It also included specialised
fencing around the grass pitches to prevent the
significant damage being caused by rabbits!

What are the benefits to participants
and the wider community?
The school is delivering the Foundation and Essex
FA’s Football Development Plan well, with par ticular
success in increasing par ticipation in girls’ football.
The facility is well-used during curriculum time;
and the school bursar provides strong leadership
for the business and financial aspects of the third
generation pitch.
Some more interesting facts:
The par tnership with Halstead Town FC through the
Football Academy Scheme has been a notable success
as it has enabled students and players to progress to
higher levels of football.The value Hedingham places
on spor t and physical activity is reflected by the fact all
of its students must under take a qualification in PE.

Project description:
In 2006
Crewe refurbished its existing
facilities to create one full-size third
generation ar tificial grass pitch, a
small-sided ar tificial grass pitch and
four changing rooms.

Who has the project engaged?
The project has enabled access to football
for children aged from four years old
through to adults.The range of activities
for men, women and participants with
disabilities, at various levels, are provided
through the following:
• Education and Schools support
programme
• Soccer Centre Football Leagues –
affiliated to Cheshire County FA
• Soccer Centre coaching sessions and
Charter Standard Holiday Courses
• Pay and Play community schemes
• Provide services for local partners –
Local/County initiatives.
Over 1,000 people play sport at the site
each week, with 214 club teams playing in
leagues and 873 further teams benefiting
from the facility.
