FOUNDATION
LEAVING AN
OLYMPIC LEGACY
This summer’s Olympic and Paralympic Games are shaping up
to be fantastic occasions with the world’s eyes on London. The
Foundation is busy building new facilities across the country that
will leave a stunning legacy for people to enjoy for years to come.
Here are just a few examples of sites with an Olympic connection:
Mayor of London
project
London Mayor Boris Johnson and Spor ts
Minister Hugh Rober tson MP joined
Olympic weightlifting hopeful Zoe Smith
to officially open the new Europa Centre,
built with a £200,000 Mayor of London
Facility Fund grant. 24 Olympic and 18
Paralympic volleyball squads will train at
this site and moreover, it will be a major
multi-spor t centre for the community long
after the Games.
Partington Sports
Village; Manchester
The Foundation-funded third generation
pitch and pavilion at Par tington Spor ts
Village, based at Broadoak School in
Manchester, has regenerated a deprived
par t of Trafford, increased spor ting
oppor tunities for pupils and the local
community, and provided a base for the
Manchester United Foundation’s excellent
work. The site has also been selected as
a training camp for international Olympic
football squads.
Long Lane playing
fields; London
Long Lane Junior FC’s Foundation-funded
playing fields in South East London were
opened by Jonathan Edwards CBE and
Foundation Trustee Phil Smith. As well
as a spor ting space for around 2,000
youngsters each week, they are to be used
as a training facility for the London 2012
Olympic and Paralympics Games.
BMX Park; Crewe
£50,000 from Barclays funded the
re-design of this high quality BMX track
in Crewe, as par t of the Foundation’s
multi-award-winning Spaces for Spor ts
par tnership with Barclays. As well as being
enjoyed by locals and the Cheshire Ghost
Riders BMX Club, the track has also been
selected as an Olympic training venue,
and was recently renamed the Shanaze
Reade BMX Park (Shanaze pictured
below), after the Team GB Olympian BMX-
er who developed her skills at the site.
