WELCOME TO OUR 29TH
EDITION OF ONSIDE...
This issue of ONSIDE falls just before the
European Championships, so it is fitting that we
have England Number One Joe Har t unveiling one
of our projects in Manchester.
Like all top players, Joe developed his skills at the
grassroots. The new facilities he opened at AFC
Urmston Meadowside will cater for the club’s 54
grassroots teams.This significantly-enhanced site
will not only provide a much better footballing
experience for the grassroots players who turn out
each week for their teams – simply for the love of
doing so – but it will enhance the oppor tunities for
those players who demonstrate the potential to go
on to the professional game.
Wallsend Boys Club and Gateshead Redheugh
1957 FC are also examples of how we are helping
to improve facilities at the grassroots. These
Newcastle-based clubs have produced an array
of world class players over the years, in spite of
seriously inadequate football facilities. Like those at
AFC Urmston Meadowside, these new facilities can
only enhance the prodigious output of talent from
these clubs. Read about Alan Shearer, Alan Pardew
and Peter Beardsley opening these new sites on
pages 10 and 11.
I am delighted to announce that the Foundation’s
first-ever annual Monitoring and Evaluation Repor t
was published recently. This provides in a single
document the significant impact that Foundation
projects are making. Although it might not sound
the most exciting read, it provides an intriguing
look at how we reassure our funders that we are
delivering tangible outcomes with their investment.
Read more about this in ‘Match Report’ on page 31.
Finally, on behalf of the grassroots, I would like
to thank you for your suppor t. I would especially
like to thank our long-standing funding partners:
the Premier League,The FA, the Depar tment for
Culture Media and Spor t and Spor t England, as
well as Barclays and the Greater London Authority,
without whose suppor t and funding none of this
would be possible.
I hope that you enjoy reading this edition
of ONSIDE.
