New benchmark
at Torquay
In 2011, the FSIF awardedTorquay United Football Club a grant of £750,000
towards the development of their new £1.9m stand at their Plainmoor
Ground. The new 1,750 seated stand replaces the existing main stand, taking
the capacity at the west of England club, to some 6,500.
The new stand has been named Bristow’s Bench in memory of the club’s
former Vice-Chairman, Paul Bristow, the life-long United supporter and who
financially supported the club after winning the National Lottery.
As well as seating 1,750 fans, Bristow’s Bench also incorporates new dressing
rooms and an IT teaching suite for the adjoiningWestlands School.
In the early summer of 2012, the last of the seats was placed in the new stand
byThea Bristow ready for the 2012/13 season.
The official opening of the stand took place with a pre-season friendly match
against Stoke City.
An FSIF grant of £35,355 enabled Marine Football Club,
members of the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League, to install a
new floodlighting system, replacing the previous lights that were
35 years old and very unreliable.
The new four-corner floodlights incorporate the latest design
and technology benefits, with a significant improvement in
lighting performance and reliability.
The new system has also enabled Marine FC to meet ground
grading requirements and maintain their membership of the
Evo-Stik Northern Premier League, as well as continuing to
provide floodlit coaching sessions for the local community.
Paul Leary, Chairman of Marine FC, was delighted, saying:
“Marine FC is thrilled to have received this latest grant from
the FSIF towards our desperately needed new floodlights.
“This is a significant award, representing 50% of the cost of the
project and this has enabled the club to place an order with
the preferred contractor and complete the work very quickly.”
The official opening of the stand took place with a pre-season
friendly match against Stoke City.
