onsıde| ISSUE 39 2 Set up in 2000, we are focused on addressing the country’s lack of quality public sports facilities. In that time we have awarded 15,247 grants worth £580m to help achieve that aim, thanks to investment provided by our core Funding Partners: the Premier League, The FA and the Government, through Sport England. We have maximised their donations further by using it to attract an additional £802m in partnership funding. Working closely with both our Funding Partners and the network of County Football Associations, we have so far delivered more than £1.4bn worth of grassroots investment. This is creating a new generation of high quality playing surfaces and changing pavilions for people in towns and cities across the country, also increasing long-term participation in football and other sports. It is designed and produced by Image Directors, and printed on paper from sustainable forests. T here is an exclusive feature with my fellow Football Foundation Ambassador, England boss Gareth Southgate. Mr Southgate and I actually went to the same school in deepest darkest Crawley back somewhere in the mists of time. It's great to see him in the England dugout and I really hope he'll be able implement the changes he wants to make, encourage the young lads he's known for many years who are moving into the senior side and – most importantly – make a difference when it comes to major tournaments. In case you were wondering, we never played in the same team as Gareth is a little older but his legend was well known and I've followed his career very closely ever since. We will also pay tribute to Graham Taylor OBE. Graham is a legend of the game and someone who we were lucky to have as a real star supporter of the FF for many years. From a personal perspective it was always a pleasure to work alongside Graham and amazing to see the genuine outpouring of affection when he sadly passed away. He loved the game passionately, knew it inside out and was always so enthusiastic, understanding and honest when I worked with him. You'll also be able to read about the launch of the Premier League Primary Stars programme on page 26 – and the free Kit & Equipment Scheme element that the Foundation is delivering. We've packed so much in you could also describe this ONSIDE as a women’s football special edition. On page 24, you can read about The FA’s new Women’s Football Strategy. We have an exclusive interview with the twinkle-toed Minister for Sport, Tracey Crouch MP (page 6.) We are also bringing you a unique and fascinating insight into what happened when the Arsenal girls Under-10s team played against boys’ teams for a whole season. How did they get on? What challenges did they face? Find out on page 20! I was trying to use my power as a FF Ambassador to organise some sort of free cake, or a bun, or even a satsuma to be handed out with every issue but apparently that is logistically impossible. Finally, we have made space to bring you some choice moments from the rollercoaster that is the life of Foundation President Lord Pendry. The extract from Lord P’s memoirs that we share includes his encounters with Nelson Mandela and Muhammed Ali, as well as an insight into setting up the Football Foundation.
