Barclays Sports for Sports and the Football Foundation have been shortlisted for Community Project of the Year at the European Diversity Awards 2012.
The awards, which count Google and RBS as their headline sponsors, received just under 500 entries from almost every country in Europe. The judges then whittled down the hopefuls to a shortlist of just eight candidates reflecting only the very best entries.
Since 2004 Barclays and the Football Foundation have built 200 multi‐sport sites in the most disadvantaged parts of the UK as part of the Barclays Spaces for Sports programme.
Barclays Spaces for Sports is a community‐based sports programme, which uses sport as a platform to reach out to a wide variety of young people, develop their life and employment skills, and revitalise disadvantaged communities in a sustainable way.
In 2011 Barclays Spaces for Sports demonstrated its commitment to ensure that all of the community sports sites have a long-term future, remain manageable for local volunteers and authorities to run and continue to engage a diverse user group.
Six regional Activity and Sustainability Advisors were employed across the UK providing dedicated one on one support and expertise to the sites whilst also introducing a ‘Sustainability Fund’ for struggling sites to access.
