press release

Arsenal and England ace Theo Walcott went back to school as he presented the Football Foundation’s 20,000th free kit.

In his role as the Foundation’s official Junior Kit Scheme (JKS) Ambassador, Theo handed over the 20,000th set of Nike football strips and equipment to St Thomas More Catholic School’s Under-14 girls team in Wood Green, North London.

Theo then helped the girls and other lucky youngsters at the school try out the new kit and equipment by showing off his skills with them on the school’s 3rd generation artificial grass pitch that was built with the help of a £1m Football Foundation grant in 2006.

Theo Walcott said: “I really enjoyed visiting the youngsters at St Thomas More School and was really pleased to have given out the 20,000th Football Foundation set of kits.

“It is really important that we continue to look after our grass roots and I am pleased that football is doing its part through the Football Foundation – and why I am proud to be one of its Ambassadors.”

2010 sees the Football Foundation reach its tenth anniversary. The event with Theo was the first major landmark event to celebrate the first ten years of its history, since it was launched by Tony Blair and then England Manager Kevin Keegan in July 2000. The Foundation has since supported more than 7,600 grassroots projects worth £875m with money provided by the Premier League, The Football Association and Government.

Theo continued: “Foundation grants are making such a difference to people of all ages right across the country – from a £400 Junior Kit Scheme voucher, to a £1m facility grant such as the one that helped build St Thomas More’s excellent 3G playing surface.

“It is great to see the Foundation’s work and I look forward to the next ten years of their success.”

About the Junior Kit Scheme (JKS)

Since 2000, the JKS distributes £1m worth of kit and equipment to junior clubs and schools every year, ensuring young players of all abilities have the best possible start in the game. The Foundation has awarded 20,000 sets of team strips awarded through the JKS to youngsters and disabled adults across the country. Items available include a full strip, training bibs, balls, flags and kit bags – everything a young footballer needs to play the game and all absolutely free of charge. A ‘fitted’ female range of kits for girls is also available to help support the growth of the women’s game – the fastest growing sport in the country.

Please note: the popularity of this scheme has been increasing over the past few years, and demand has already exceeded the available budget for this year. Plans for future JKS budgets will be announced in due course via the Foundation website.
