A local girl from Portsmouth had a day she won’t forget for a while when she led out Tomas Berdych onto court at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals earlier today.
Eight year old Cheyenne Cates was offered the opportunity to be an official mascot at the O2 for the ATP World Tour Finals – a global sporting event that will be watched by millions of tennis fans around the world.
Cheyenne, who is a keen participant at the Portsmouth FC Barclays Spaces for Sports (BS4S) flagship site at Bansbury Park – where she regularly attends tennis coaching sessions – was given the unique opportunity to walk out onto Centre Court at the O2 area in front of 20,000 people.
“It was the best day ever” she said. “It was great to go onto court with Berdych and I’m really happy that Barclays have given my the chance to do it because it was really fun.”
A Barclays Spokesman said: “We are delighted to have been able to give Cheyenne Cates the opportunity to lead out two players at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals out onto court as an official mascot. Our Barclays Spaces for Sports sites have been inspiring people of all ages, origins and backgrounds to participate in sport and we hope these sites will continue to do so for many years to leave a lasting sporting legacy for future generations.”
The mascot opportunity is just one of many Barclays tennis activities taking place for the tournament. BS4S also gave away 1,000 free tickets for the Barclays ATP World Tennis Finals to young participants at their 200 sports sites across the country. 20 lucky participants took part in a coaching session on the practice court at the O2 with tennis legend, and former Wimbledon champion, Boris Becker.
BS4S have also teamed up with tennis brand HEAD to deliver coaching sessions to a further seven sites around the UK to help inspire young people to get involved in sport and create sustainable tennis activity.
Barclays has a five year sponsorship deal with the ATP World Tour Finals which sees the top eight tennis players in the world compete to become the ATP World Tour winner. This year’s event takes place between November 5-12 at the O2 arena.
