Local young footballers at the Chamberlain Gardens Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) were given the opportunity to see the Barclays Premier League trophy first-hand yesterday (Wednesday 18 February). The day gave kids and adults alike the chance to get pictures with the 25kg masterpiece at the site, which is one of 200 Barclays Spaces for Sports sites across the UK. Photos with the trophy followed a football tournament at the site.
David Johnson, Sports Co-Ordinator at Sport4Life had this to say about the event:“It was brilliant to see the Barclays Premier League trophy in Birmingham. All the young people where incredibly excited about the opportunity to have their photo with it! I think they all worked that little bit harder in their football matches because of its presence. Thank you to Barclays and the Football Foundation for giving us this opportunity”.
The event, run by the Football Foundation, is an example of the partnership between Barclays and the Football Foundation, whose programme Barclays Spaces for Sports won Partnership of the Year at the 2014 Football Business Awards.
Barclays Spaces for Sports is a community sports programme which uses the power of sport to help young people develop the confidence and skills they need, and revitalise disadvantaged communities. It is part of Barclays’ commitment to 5 Million Young Futures – a goal to build the next generation of achievers by helping them develop enterprise, employability and financial skills.
As part of this scheme, Barclays has partnered with the Football Foundation to deliver the award-winning £67m facilities investment programme which has developed 200 community facilities across the UK, that cater for a wide range of sports.
Paulette Cohen, Barclays Head of Global Programmes, said: “Barclays was delighted to be able to provide this unique opportunity for everyone involved with Chamberlain Gardens to see the Barclays Premier League Trophy. The trophy tour is a great way for Barclays Spaces for Sports to reward just some of the 53,000 people who use our 200 sites across the country.”
