Local young footballers at the Acklam Green Centre Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) were given the opportunity to see the Barclays Premier League trophy first-hand recently. The day gave kids and adults alike the chance to get pictures with the 25kg masterpiece at the MUGA, which is one of 200 Barclays Spaces for Sports sites across the UK.
Carol Kerr, Business Manager at Actes, a Middlesbrough-based charity and social enterprise who work closely with the Acklam Green site, had this to say about the event: “Thanks to Barclays and the Football Foundation for providing us with this great opportunity. It has provided everyone here at Acklam Green the chance to get up close to the Barclays Premier League trophy, something normally only professional footballers get the privilege of doing! I’ve no doubt that all the young people will remember this day for a long time.”
The event, run by the Football Foundation, is an example of the partnership between Barclays and the Football Foundation, whose programme Barclays Spaces for Sports won Partnership of the Year at the 2014 Football Business Awards.
Barclays Spaces for Sports is a community sports programme which uses the power of sport to help young people develop the confidence and skills they need, and revitalise disadvantaged communities. It is part of Barclays’ commitment to 5 Million Young Futures – a goal to build the next generation of achievers by helping them develop enterprise, employability and financial skills.
As part of this scheme, Barclays has partnered with the Football Foundation to deliver the award-winning £67m facilities investment programme which has developed 200 community facilities across the UK, that cater for a wide range of sports.
Paulette Cohen, Barclays Head of Global Programmes, said: “Barclays was delighted to be able to provide this unique opportunity for every involved with Acklam Green to see the Barclays Premier League Trophy. The trophy tour is a great way for Barclays Spaces for Sports to reward just some of the 53,000 people who use our 200 sites across the country.”
