Celebrated Bolton author, Rick Banks, and former Bolton Wanderers’ captain, Kevin Davies, yesterday presented a remarkable donation totalling £42,400 to help build a new grassroots facility in the town.
Rick Banks, whose stunning debut work won glowing plaudits from critics and the media alike, donating the entire £22,400 profits from the book, Football Type, to Horwich St Mary’s Junior FC.
The remaining £20,000 was generously donated by former Bolton and current Preston North End Striker, Kevin Davies, through his foundation, Kids Of Bolton.
Horwich St Marys FC’s home ground, Scholes Bank Playing Fields, has historically suffered from drainage problems, overuse and poor quality changing provision. This funding will help the club realise their dream of replacing the leaking shipping containers their young footballers currently get changed in with a brand new clubhouse and will see the creation of a further three natural turf pitches to relieve the pressure on the existing waterlogged pitches
And there will be further reason to celebrate soon, as work on the site will get off to an official start at the beginning of April!
Speaking at the presentation, Rick said: “I’m glad I’ve had the opportunity to come down here today to see what state the site is in – I can’t wait to see how different this will look once it’s complete!
“It’s been fantastic to meet the committee at Horwich St Marys too. These are the guys giving up their time week in, week out to support kids’ football in their community. They’re doing Bolton a real service, and I’m so pleased I could help them out.”
Kevin Davies said: “All too often, the potential for grassroots sport to improve kids’ confidence, social and life skills can be overlooked and underrated – not anymore!
“The new facilities at Scholes Bank will provide local kids with a fantastic opportunity, and I’m thrilled that Kids Of Bolton could support such a worthy project.”
Lesley Allon, Secretary at Horwich St Marys JFC said: “On behalf of all Horwich St Marys, the kids, the committee and the local community, I’d like to say a great big ‘thank you’ to Rick and Kevin – we are so grateful and humbled by your generosity!
“Thanks to these contributions and the grants from our other funders, the site will be unrecognisable when it is developed and a safe, comfortable environment for local youngsters to enjoy their football.”
