Dominic Raab, MP for Esher and Walton, has formally opened Claygate’s new £350,000 community clubhouse.

The new facility has already ‘opened for business’ and not only includes state-of-the-art changing facilities but also an already thriving cafe in the new clubroom.

The fundraising and the management of the project has been carried out by members of the cricket club and in addition much of the internal completion in the building has been achieved through volunteer labour. This has come from the cricket club, football club and local community, who have done most of the internal fitting-out such as carpentry, painting and landscaping.

In addition to being the home for the main users – Claygate Cricket Club and Claygate Royals Football Club – it is already attracting use by a wide range of other community groups.

The new building has replaced the old clubhouse which was more than 75 years old and as part of the project been knocked down and the area cleared.

Dominic Raab MP, who has actively supported the project throughout, commented: “In a year which will be dominated by the Olympics, it’s vital that we recognise the efforts of a local community in terms of improving sporting facilities at a very different level.  Today is a fitting tribute and recognition for all those who have supported the project financially and all the volunteers who have worked so hard to bring it to life.”

The club worked in partnership with the Surrey FA to secure a £20,000 grant from the Football Foundation. Funded by the Premier League, The FA, and the Government (via Sport England), the Football Foundation is the country’s largest sports charity. Since it was launched in 2000, the Foundation has awarded around 8,000 grants worth more than £420m towards improving grassroots sport, which it has used to attract additional partnership funding of over £520m.

Other funding came from: Elmbridge Borough Council (£82k), Surrey County Council (£6k) and Claygate Parish Council (£20k), The Veolia Environmental Trust (£20k), Saville Consulting (£20k), Grosvenor Billingshurst (£5k) and from Walpole Financial (£2,500).

Stephen Wells, Chairman of the Claygate Recreation Ground Trust, added: “This is the biggest public building to be built in the village for many years and has created an attractive and important community facility for  use and enjoyment for generations to come.”

Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “I commend Claygate Royals FC and the Surrey FA for working tirelessly to secure this funding and I look forward to seeing the end result in the near future.

“This year is an exciting time for sport in this country and a tremendous opportunity to create a grassroots legacy. The hosting of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will inspire generations of people up and down the country to reap the rewards that sport has to offer. The Football Foundation is dedicated, with funding provided from the Premier League, The FA and government, to raising the standard of grassroots community sports facilities and to getting more people actively playing the national sport.”

“I would like to place on record my most sincere thanks to Dominic Raab MP for supporting this project and taking the time out of his busy schedule to attend the opening.”
