Euxton euphoric after £69,420 facility opening

Grassroots sport in the Lancashire town of Euxton has been given a new lease of life following the improvement of pitches and changing room facilities at Greenside Recreation Fields, funded by the Football Foundation, the country’s largest sports charity.

Thanks to the Football Foundation’s grant of £39,420, the Greenside site now boasts a refurbished changing room and kitchen facilities, drainage works to the pitches, storage extension and an overflow car parking area. The new drainage works are particularly significant as they will help Euxton Girls FC to play more matches in the season without having to cancel games because of waterlogged surfaces.

Euxton Parish Council and Euxton Girls FC worked in partnership with the Lancashire FA to secure the £39,420 grant from the Football Foundation. Since 2000, in Lancashire alone, the Foundation has awarded 234 grants worth £24.9m which have attracted an additional £9.7m in partnership funding.

The Football Foundation was set up by the Premier League, The FA and the Government in 2000. Since then 9,600 grants worth £412m have been awarded thanks to investment from those three funding partners. The Foundation has used this to attract more than £565m of additional partnership funding into the grassroots game. Last year alone 741,801 people played sport at Foundation sites with 63,702 sporting qualifications also gained at the new facilities.

Michael Walsh, Club Secretary and Euxton Girls FC coach, said: “Club members and players are very proud of the new and improved facilities at Greenside, and this project would not have been possible without the grant from the Football Foundation and excellent support of Euxton Parish Council, who contributed £15,000 towards the project. Euxton Girls FC also contributed £15,000 towards the project and all the members and players are looking forward to an excellent season of football.”

Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “It is so rewarding to see this new facility completed and ready for use by the local community. Alongside the Lancashire County FA, Euxton Girls Football Club and Euxton Parish Council have worked extremely hard to ensure this project has come to fruition and deserve great credit for its endeavours.

“There is a very strong correlation between the quality of sports facilities that are available at the community, grassroots level and healthy participation levels. The better the quality of sports facilities, the more likely people will enjoy the experience of playing sport for the love of doing so and will,  therefore, be more likely to remain involved in regular sport. This can only be good for the general health of the nation as a whole.

“This project in Euxton is a wonderful example of what the Football Foundation is doing right across the country.  Foundation investment is helping to transform the national inventory of facilities that supports the grassroots game in this country, and thanks must go to our funding partners, the Premier League, The FA, and the Government, via Sport England, for their crucial and generous financial support, without which none of this would be possible.”
