The Football Foundation’s community sports partnership with Barclays – Barclays Spaces for Sports – was awarded the ‘Best Sponsorship/Partnership of the Year’ at the Football Business Awards 2014 ceremony, held last Thursday at Chelsea Football Club’s home ground, Stamford Bridge.

Barclays Spaces for Sports is a community sports programme which uses the power of sport to help young people develop the confidence and skills they need. As part of this programme, Barclays has partnered with the Football Foundation to develop 200 community facilities across the UK, which cater for a wide range of sports and over 53,000 regular users every week.

Since inception in 2000, Barclays has invested over £40 million into the programme, while a further £30 million has been contributed by the Football Foundation, which is also responsible for programme delivery. It is part of Barclays’ commitment to 5 Million Young Futures – a goal to build the next generation of achievers by helping them develop enterprise, employability and financial skills.

Experts at the Football Foundation work closely with each site to identify their needs and provide practical help, such as advice on how to draw up new business and marketing plans and establish new local partnerships.

The Football Business Award judges commented: “The partnership between Barclays and the Football Foundation has impacted local communities hugely. The overarching goal of the partnership’s tenth anniversary was to ensure successful sustainability through hands-on practical support. This was a great initiative with strong results. Well worthy of recognition.”

Paulette Cohen, Director for Global Programmes, Community Investment at Barclays, said: “For ten years, Barclays Spaces for Sports has used the positive values of sport to support communities and help young people fulfil their potential. I am very proud to see our partnership with the Football Foundation recognised for the second time by the Football Business Awards. This accolade is testament to the achievements of all those who have been involved over the past decade.”

Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “The Barclays Spaces for Sports programme has set the standard for Corporate Social Responsibility partnerships since we established it with Barclays ten years ago.

“200 multi-sport facilities have been built across the country for the enjoyment of local people. These facilities have been built where they are most needed – in some of the most deprived areas of the country. Access to sports facilities is critical in deprived areas where the greatest instances of health inequalities exist. All Barclays Spaces for Sports facilities are self-sustaining and will leave a lasting legacy for decades to come that no other programme can match.

“This prestigious award is the seventh national or international award that Spaces has won, which reinforces the Football Foundation’s credentials as one of the world’s premier deliverers of sports-based CSR programmes.”
