Football Foundation welcomes Appointment of new England Manager

The Football Foundation today welcomed The FA’s appointment of Roy Hodgson, saying it was a decision taken with “the future of the game in mind”.

Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “We welcome the news that Roy Hodgson has been appointed as Manager of the England national team. He brings experience of managing teams in domestic and international leagues, as well as at international tournaments.

“It is particularly encouraging that The FA has said that it looked at the experience of other leading football nations who have built from the grassroots up to achieve success when making this appointment.

“It is, therefore, very encouraging for the millions of grassroots footballers who play football every week on parks across the country.  A strong grassroots game with quality facilities and excellent, age-appropriate coaching can only help to improve the delivery of home-grown talent to the professional game and the national team.”

Since 2000 the Foundation has worked closely with its core funding partners – The FA, the Premier League and Government (via Sport England) – to improve grassroots football. It has done so by working in partnership with the network of County FAs to provide grants totalling £420m that help fund the development of better community sports facilities, or smaller grants towards club development and the creation of new grassroots teams. It has attracted a further £520m of investment through partnership funding into grassroots sport, meaning that the Football Foundation has been responsible for delivering grassroots projects worth just under £1billion in that time.

This work has significantly increased participation [1] in our national game amongst the general public and is also creating a platform for The FA and Premier League’s youth development plans – something that should bear fruit in the shape of more home-grown talent being generated for the benefit of domestic clubs and the England team.
