Local MP and Secretary of State for Health, Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt, handed Hambledon Football Club and grassroots sport in Surrey a boost as he presented Hambledon FC with a cheque for £99,999 from the Football Foundation.
Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt, MP for South West Surrey, said: “I would like to say a very big thank you to the Football Foundation, who I know do brilliant work all over the country getting young people playing football. I'm absolutely delighted my constituency has benefited in such a handsome way.
“The big lesson of the Olympics was the more young people we get playing sport, the more it benefits academic performance, discipline at school and healthy living. The big challenge is getting young people carrying on sport when they leave school which is why a facility like this is so important as it benefits the wider community.”
The cheque for £99,999 from the Foundation, will allow Hambledon FC to replace their existing outdated pavilion with a new modern facility which will be used by the club and managed by Hambledon Football Trust. The new sports pavilion will comprise of home and away changing rooms, including showers and toilets, a changing room for officials, a hall area, a small kitchen and storage space.
The Charter Standard Adult club has been working for the past four years to gain funding to replace its current changing facilities, which the captain described as "an overgrown old shed".
Funded by the Premier League, The FA, and the Government (via Sport England), the Football Foundation is the country’s largest sports charity. Since it was launched in 2000, the Foundation has awarded around 8,000 grants worth more than £420m towards improving grassroots sport, which it has used to attract additional partnership funding of over £520m.
Matt Kiley, Secretary of Hambledon FC, said: “Hambledon FC would like to thank the Football Foundation for supporting grassroots football in our area with this grant. The club would also like to thank other funding contributors Waverley, Surrey Playing Fields and Surrey Community Fund.”
Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “I commend Hambledon FC and the Surrey FA for working tirelessly to secure this funding and I look forward to seeing the end result in the near future.
“The Football Foundation is dedicated, with funding provided from the Premier League, The FA and government (via Sport England), to raising the standard of grassroots community sports facilities and to getting more people actively playing the national sport.”
