Pupils at Redborne Upper School in Central Bedfordshire are celebrating the opening of a new state-of-the-art third generation (3G) artificial grass pitch, funded by the Football Foundation.

The facility will be used by students during the school day and local community groups in the evenings, at weekends and out of term time.

The school will appoint a new football development manager who will work with the School’s PE Department, the Redborne Sports Partnership and Bedfordshire FA to develop football across the county.

Local partner clubs Flitwick Eagles, Maulden Magpies, Ampthill Youth and Westoning Youth will make extensive use of the facility. The new pitch is full sized and can be sub divided into three smaller training pitches.

The school worked in partnership with the Bedfordshire FA to secure a £352,000 grant from the Football Foundation. Funded by the Premier League, The FA, and the Government (via Sport England), the Football Foundation is the country’s largest sports charity. Since it was launched in 2000, the Foundation has awarded around 8,000 grants worth more than £420m towards improving grassroots sport, which it has used to attract additional partnership funding of over £520m.

Nigel Croft, the school’s Headteacher, said:“The addition of the 3G pitch on the Redborne Upper School site will significantly enhance the school’s long term mission to extend community use of the schools facilities whenever possible.”

Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “This facility underlines the commitment the Football Foundation has to improving community access to quality local football facilities across the country. I commend Redbourne Upper School and the Bedfordshire FA for working tirelessly to make this vision become a reality.”

“The Football Foundation is dedicated to raising the standard of grassroots community sports facilities and to getting more people actively playing the national sport.”
