White Hart Lane Sport Centre opened newly refurbished tennis courts today that replicate the look of the Centre Court at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals which takes place at The O2 next month.

Young British tennis star Oliver Golding (a former US Open winner at Junior Boys’ level) and senior player Ross Hutchins opened the revamped courts with an official first serve and stayed on court to host a training session for young members of the tennis club.

The new look courts with their Barclays ATP World Tour Finals logos and court markings were revamped by Barclays as part of its Barclays Spaces for Sports programme, a community sports programme aimed at using sport to revitalise disadvantaged communities as well as to tackle key social issues.  In the UK Barclays has delivered 200 sports sites across many disadvantaged areas through a successful partnership with the Football Foundation, and is also delivering programmes globally and in the UK that deliver a range of life skills to the next generation.

David Wheldon, Barclays Managing Director of Brand, Reputation and Citizenship, said: “The 200 sites around the country are all about getting local communities involved in sport, especially in areas where facilities are scarce. By refurbishing the courts and giving them the feel of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals court we want to inspire the next generation. Encouraging young people who are used to seeing their heroes on TV or in the stands at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals to pick up a racquet and play.”

Other courts at the Lilian Baylis site in Vauxhall, South Norwood Recreation Ground in Crystal Palace and Rosemary Gardens in Islington have also been renovated.

Oliver Golding commented, “The courts feel fantastic and it is great they are so easily accessible for the local community. I really hope they can encourage young kids in the area to give tennis a go.”

Siwan Stephens, Tennis Development Officer at White Hart Lane Sports Centre, remarked, “It is fantastic for the club to have the courts refurbished. After a successful year for the White Hart Lane tennis club this really will help to draw new players onto court and will enthuse our current members to spend more time practicing.”
