Watford's ExtraTime project is now into the second year of a two year pilot programme that is funded by the Football Foundation and Comic Relief. The aims of the project are to increase the number of individuals aged 60 and over to participate in Community Activities to improve their physical, mental and social well being on a regular basis.
Extra Time takes place every Thursday 10am-12noon at Vicarage Road offering a variety of activities to encourage older people to come and try a new and different sport or activity in a fun, safe and structured environment. However first and foremost the ExtraTime programme is a social session where people can come along for a tea or coffee, read the paper, play some board games or go on the Nintendo WII and if participants want to have a go at other activities such as Carpet bowls, Tai Chi, dance or attend the Learning Centre the opportunity is also available. So far this year they have seen 84 different people attend at least one session and currently have on average 50 people attending every week.
Watford have also added ‘Extra dates’ to their programme this year. So far they have organised three Health Walks in conjunction with Countryside management around Cassiobury park, two trips to the Hollywood bowl and have a number of other activities planned for the next few months.
