delivering kickz

Kickz involves taking constructive activity into targeted local estates and neighbourhoods with high instances of anti-social behaviour (ASB). The club and delivery partners provide three sessions per week for 48 weeks of the year at times that have been identified with high levels of crime or ASB. The three sessions will include football coaching, competitions and a flexible session, the content of which will be influenced by the young people. This could include aspects such as other sports (e.g. basketball, street dance and gym), music based sessions and a range of developmental activities e.g. Drug Awareness, Healthy Eating, Volunteering, Career Development and Anti-Weapons Workshops.

The target age range is 12–18 and the project aims to “home grow” the youth leaders, volunteers and coaches of the future. Some participants that show commitment to the project are offered coaching and volunteering opportunities, and once accredited some have been offered employment through the project as a role model for others. Future plans include schemes across the country coming together in the form of competitions at a local, regional and national basis, with finals potentially being held at club stadiums. A highly successful North West U16 and U18 tournament was held at the City of Manchester stadium in May 2007.

The project is targeted geographically and participation on the scheme is by self-referral, with a mix of boys and girls from the local community taking part. The project uses the hook of professional club brands and opportunities such as player appearances, to encourage young people to participate, and by taking the project to them it is envisaged that even hard to reach groups will take part.

When available, Community Police officers and Support Officers are present at sessions using football as an opportunity to break down barriers between the police and young people.  Youth Services and Youth Offending Teams will be encouraged to use these schemes to provide opportunities and diversion to young people who come to their attention. A range of developmental opportunities will be connected to the sessions including chances to gain accreditation and qualifications where appropriate.
