School sport at primary school level can be a great force for good. It can provide invaluable opportunities for children to develop basic motor skills at an early age. As children develop these skills it is important that the opportunities exist that allow schools to foster and promote good links with the community in which they reside.
The Foundation has, in conjunction with The Youth Sports Trust, The Football Association, The Lawn Tennis Association The Rugby Football Union and the England and Wales Cricket Board, formed a partnership whereby each of the above named sports recognise the benefits of promoting structured play at the primary school level.
The “Primary Playground 4 Sport” Scheme allows schools to invest in simple playground markings at minimal outlay and for the above named sports creates the opportunity to form links with primary schools and local sports clubs.
As important as the above is the opportunity such schemes create to increase the range and level of physical activity in the playground, integrate children more freely by offering a wider choice of activity. Some of the benefits are listed below:
Increased physical activity
Skill level increase for all pupils
Decrease in the level of bullying and fighting incidents in the playground
Distinct nature of zoning in the playground creates a sanctuary area for pupils
Injuries are significantly lower
Focus on inclusion for all pupils
Children are more ready to learn when returning from playtime
More positive attitude to the playground environment from, staff, lunchtime supervisors and pupils
Children have fun
The Foundation has put together a guide to developing and using Primary Playgrounds 4 sports. The guide offers basic advice on layouts and drills. A full playground resource pack has been produced by the Youth Sport Trust and provides a series of steps to support schools with the development, redesign and improvement of their playground, from involving the children to training key staff and monitoring the new playground's impact. It is available by clicking on the attachment below.
