Playing With Words (PWW) is a school based reading initiative that sees Football League clubs challenging primary and secondary school classes to read 100 books within the space of a term, earning a special reward from their club once they reach the target.
The scheme is run through club Playing for Success centres who oversee their three PWW partner schools and arrange reward sessions at the end of each school term.
Each partner school receives brand new books as inspiring reading resources and for every book read by a pupil, one club crest sticker is added to a giant PWW club wall chart. As the group get closer and closer to their class target the pupils become more and more motivated to read!
Pupils can also record their reading choices and write their own book reviews in their personal PWW Reading Journals.
Schools filling their wall charts this year have enjoyed a range of rewards, including PfS centre sessions, football coaching, ground tours, match tickets, and even visits from club mascots!
Playing With Words is now in its second year of delivery, with 24 Football League clubs and 72 schools taking part in the scheme. Over 3000 children participated in 2007, with over 6,000 expected during 2008.
Playing With Words is delivered by the Football Foundation as part of a partnership with the Football League, National Literacy Trust, DCSF, Professional Footballers Association and Puffin Books. Please click on a logo below to visit any of our project partner websites.
