Maria Eagle, MP for Garston and Halewood, gave grassroots football in Merseyside a boost, as she presented Halewood Academy with a Youth Football Goalposts cheque from the Football Foundation and The FA, worth £402.

Halewood Academy, a school for students aged 11-16 located in the community of Halewood in Merseyside, had applied for funding towards the purchase of new smaller goals recommended by The FA for Under-11 and Under-12 matches. Under the Foundation’s Youth Football Goalpost scheme, grants are available to schools to cover 50% towards the total cost of purchasing these new smaller goals.

As well as the school’s pupils, the goals will be used by a number of local grassroots football clubs, with Kingsthorne JFC, Halewood Athletic FC, Halewood Town Vets and Arncliffe JFC among the clubs who will make the most of the new goalposts in training and matches throughout the year.

Funded by the Premier League, The FA, and the Government, via Sport England, the Football Foundation is the nation’s largest sports charity. Since it was launched in 2000 the Football Foundation has awarded 13,000 grants worth £520million towards improving grassroots sport, which it has used to attract an extra £736 million in partnership funding – over £1.24 billion of investment into the grassroots game.

Maria Eagle MP said of the investment in her constituency: "I am pleased to see grassroots football receiving some attention in my constituency. I visited Halewood Academy and had the pleasure of watching a Year 7 football game, seeing for myself how the funding will benefit the progress of football at the school, and I was happy to present the cheque on behalf of the Football Foundation and the English School's FA. I saw the bar hit 4 times in 5 minutes, so those goals need to be robust!"

Susan Brett, Head of Physical Education at Halewood Academy, who applied for the grant on behalf of the school said: “I would like to thank the Football Foundation, The FA and English School’s Football Association on behalf of the students at Halewood Academy for supporting our student’s development by providing the funding for these goal posts to help football at the Academy continue to develop.”

Paul Thorogood, the CEO of the Football Foundation said: “Congratulations to Halewood Academy on working with the Liverpool FA to secure this grant for Youth Football Goalposts, which will help benefit the students and community significantly. Many thanks also to Maria Eagle MP for showing her support for the grassroots game by taking time out of her busy schedule to present this cheque on behalf of the Football Foundation.”
