Raised in Sussex, the central defender came through the ranks at Crystal Palace FC before joining Aston Villa FC, and then Middlesbrough FC. Gareth retired from football in 2006, having amassed almost 650 appearances across an 18-year playing career, which also saw him win 57 England caps. Next, he managed Middlesbrough in the Premier League for three years from June 2006, overseeing more than 150 games along the way. In August 2013, he was appointed England Under-21 manager and won the Toulon Tournament in 2016 – the first English win there in 22 years. He was appointed England manager in December 2016.

Gareth is a Football Foundation Ambassador. Our Ambassadors support the Foundation's commitment to building better community sports facilities across the county, which support the health of the nation – its people, communities and economy.
